The Eat Smart Healthy Restaurant Program

Trends in Canada show that consumers are interested in nutrition and that they want to eat foods that are best for their health.  At the same time, the average Canadian eats out almost 5 times per week, so it makes sense to promote healthy eating in restaurants.

The Eat Smart! Restaurant Program is a new provincial program that offers recognition to Ontario restaurants that meet exceptional standards by:

o        having a variety of healthier food choices on the menu and by request,

o        having kitchen staff certified in safe food handling, and

o        providing more non-smoking seating than is required by the municipal by-law.

Partners of this program include the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit, Heart Health Action Windsor-Essex, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario and the Canadian Cancer Society. The goal is to help reduce chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer, as well as food-borne illnesses.

You can identify an Eat Smart! winning restaurant by looking for the logo decal on the restaurant’s door or window.  Here is a list of our winning restaurants (listed alphabetically) in Windsor and Essex County to date:
